This is a difficult question. I’m hardly in the writing mood right now, but seeing as it is 11:23PM while I’m writing this, I need to keep the flow going and jot something down.
For this question, I would have to mix things up and go out on a limb here to say that the wisest things I’ve ever heard anyone say, were things that came from my own mouth. No, I’m not sucking my own dick with this question. I’m not so full of ego that I think myself the smartest, wisest person.
The problem I’m having with this question comes from the keyword “wisest”. I’ve heard plenty of wise people say wise things. However, from my meager little perspective, wisdom comes from experience, and the sage advice directed to someone is usually designed to be a shortcut around that experience.
For example, my initial thought was when I was younger and people would tell me not to be in a rush to grow up. “Time flies,” people would say. However at the time that wasn’t the wisest thing I’ve heard. In fact those words were void of any substance because I hadn’t yet had that perspective of time to where I could even comprehend what the fuck they were getting at. The nine month school year may as well have been a fucking eternity, so hearing things like “slow down” had absolutely no basis in reality. Sure, in retrospect it was the wisest thing I’ve heard, but at the time there was no wisdom there because I hadn’t yet the adequate experience in which to build a foundation of knowledge on the subject.
But, on the flip side, when I tell young people to slow down and take their time, those are the wisest words I’ve ever heard. They’re coming from my mouth, from my experience. So any piece of advice I give to another person, that comes from my own experience on a subject, is by definition the wisest things I’ve ever heard.
Sorry, this blog post isn’t much fun to read. Fuck, I’m not even having fun writing it. I’m sure I’ve taken this question, bent it over, and had my way with it. I’m sure I’ve even missed the mark here entirely. So just to cover my ass I’ll include the wisest thing I’ve heard somebody else say.
“Always wipe front to back, never back to front.”
I’ve lived a life free of feces scented testicles and I’m sure David is forever appreciative of that fact. I know I am.
