We decided to do it right and rent a car. Primarily because the concert was in St. Petersburg and my car currently does not have optimal (or almost any) brakes and rotors, but also so we can travel in style. I picked up three tickets for David. One for him, one for me, and one for a friend of his choosing.
He invited his Dad to come with us, and I'll be frank, I thought he was going to flake out on us. His track record for dependability is as such. However, he didn't. We picked up our rental car from the airport, a Jeep Compass, and then picked up his Dad and headed down to St. Pete.
We got to St. Petersburg and after a bit of a struggle trying to find a parking spot, we managed to park the car and walked around trying to kill some time before the show.
The venue for the concert was awesome. Unlike the Kim Petras concert the venue was an outdoor venue. It was like a courtyard in the center of a bunch of buildings. We filed in and the show began.
The opening act for Thundercat was Channel Tres. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect with the opening act, but I know I wasn't expecting much. However, let me tell you, Channel Tres turned it out! He had this fun fusion of house and west-coast rap influenced music. Here's a video clip where you can see me awkwardly trying to find the rhythm.
Let me say that at this point I was having some serious wardrobe regrets. During our Anniversary shopping trip David got me some Doc Martens. The problem with these shoes though was that they were a full size too small. I was told it was fine and I'd break them in...however by this time in the night the shoes were bringing me to tears. The pain was extreme enough to where I had to take the boots off and stand and dance in my socks. Which means I was barefooted on flat ground brining me to tears from my back pain.
So Channel Tres wrapped up and out came Thundercat. I like Thundercat's music but wasn't sure how much I'd dig the show. This was definitely more for David than me, however I thoroughly enjoyed it. This guy doesn't play the bass. He speaks and sings with his bass guitar. It's honestly a second language for him. Watching him run through crazy scales and arpeggios to funky music was breathtaking.
Also, as it turns out he has cat paw pads tattooed in his palm and I want to steal that idea. It was the coolest thing!
It was hard for me to enjoy the show after awhile from the pain in my feet and back and I felt awful. Like I had ruined the night for the guys due to a poor wardrobe choice. We dropped Dave off and then the car and then headed home for the night.
That's the second concert David and I have attended together and it was a great time. David wants me to find a concert for my music interests, but because of COVID-19 concert choices have been kind of limited. Also, because of the smaller intimate venue-type concerts we've had from Kim Petras and Thundercat, it's hard to even consider attending a large concert. I'm still looking and definitely want to make sure we continue this trend of concert-going.
